Project "Chibis". Information letter

Категория: Новости проекта Чибис-М

On January 25, 2012 the micro-satellite  «Chibis-M» was successfully detached from the transportation vehicle «Progress M-13М» and started its mission. The orbit parameters are: perigee 497 km; apogee 513 km; period 94,55 min; inclination 51,62 deg. The telemetry information confirmed that all onboard systems are working. The scale of the micro-satellite with open solar panels and antenna is 1,2 m x 1 m.
Video of the "Chibis-M" detachment from "Progress" can be seen on www.roscosmos.ru/main.php?id=216.

This micro-satellite (total mass - 40 kg, scientific payload - 12.5 kg) was designed and constructed by Space Research Institute (IKI) of Russian Academy of Sciences (Principal Designer – Dr. Vadim Angarov, angarov at tarusa.ru).
Complex of scientific instruments was realized by the consortium consisting from:
•    Space Research Institute (IKI, Prof. Stas Klimov),
•    Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) of Moscow University (Prof. Michael Panasjuk, panasyuk at sinp.msu.ru),
•    Physical Institute (FIAN) of Russian Academy (acad. Alex Gurevich, alex at lpi.ru),
•    Lviv Center of Institute for Space Research (LC ISR, Prof. Valery Korepanov, vakor at isr.lviv.ua) Ukraine,
•    Etvos University (EU, Prof. Csaba Ferencz), Hungary.

This mission is dedicated to studies of Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) and accompanying emissions above thunderstorms in the upper atmosphere. The multi-instrument technique, covering nearly the whole spectrum of electromagnetic emissions (radio, optical, UV, X-ray and gamma bands), is designed for the simultaneous monitoring of lightning discharges with unprecedented time resolution.

Scientific instruments
- X-ray & Gamma ray detector in energy range 20keV -1 MeV (SINP)
- UV/IR detector with wavelengths 180 - 800 nm and 650--800 nm (SINP)
- Digital photo camera with spatial resolution 300 m ("Rustr Technologies" and IKI)
- Radiofrequency Analyzer in the frequency range 26 – 48 МHz (IKI)
- Wave magnetic complex in the range 0.1 - 40kHz (LC ISR and EU)
- Data acquisition and transmission system (IKI): operative memory 2 units x 256 Mb, TM downlink at frequency 2.2 GHz and speed 1 Mbps, the expected information flow ~ 50 Мb/day

The Chibis team is interested in the collaboration and data exchange with groups conducting ground-based observations of high-altitude TLE, TGF, and electromagnetic emission from thunderstorms. Collaboration with lightning detection centers is highly needed too.
